Instructions

See below for basic instructions and technical guidelines for all of the tabs present in this webmap portal. Alternatively, watch the following tutorial to learn how to navigate this webmap portal:

Main

Allows users to visualize one health, environmental or demographic indicator at a time.

  • 1. Choose a topic (i.e. Child Mortality - 2001) in the table of contents on the left and then expand the list of indicators by clicking on the +. (Alternatively, click on the - to collapse the list.)
  • 2. Only one indicator can be displayed at a time in the Main window.
  • 3. You can zoom in and out within the map window by clicking the - or + buttons in the left hand corner, or alternately using your mouse to scroll.
  • 4. The colours of the districts correspond to the classified values identified in the legend shown in in the bottom right-hand corner. Depending on your computer screen size you may have to scroll down to see the legend.
  • 5. Hover over the map to identify a district.
  • 6. Click on a district to open an infobox with district-level indicators. Within the district info window, some of the indicators are shown in the following format: District value| State value | National value. Scroll up and down to see the complete list of indicators.

Compare Indicators

Enables a side-by-side comparison of two indicators.

  • 1. The columns (Map A and Map B) in the table of contents on the left side link to the individual map windows, Map A and Map B, respectively.
  • 2. Select two different indicators, one in column Map A and the other in column Map B, to compare them.
  • 3. As in the Main tab, you can select individual districts in both map windows, as well as zoom in and out to specific areas, regions or districts.

Data

Provides various file formats of the datasets used for the visualizations in the Main and Compare Indicators tabs.

  • 1. To download, select the preferred file format by clicking its corresponding hyperlink.
  • 2. Download should commence immediately. If not, wait for a prompt to download and then save the resultant file. If you want to save the file in a different folder destination, right-click the appropriate hyperlink and select 'Save link as...'

Glossary

Contains detailed information about the indicators visualized in the Main and Compare Indicators tabs, which are offered in the Data tab.

  • 1. The labels for each indicator correspond to the names of the attributes in the district infobox and downloadable files.
  • 2. Some indicators are not found in the Glossary Tab either because they are self-explanatory or because they are generated from other indicators already described in the glossary. Please read the descriptions to reproduce these indicators. For example, Female to Male Mortality Ratio can be generated by dividing the following two indicators: female 1-59 month mortality by male 1-59 month mortality.

About Us

Presents information about the institutions that have been involved in the creation of this webmap portal.

Maps

Contains PNG files of selected indicators available for download.

  • 1. To download, click the appropriate thumbnail associated with the preferred indicator.
  • 2. Wait for a prompt to download, and save or open the resultant file for personal use.

About this Project

The purpose of this site is to showcase and share Indian epidemiological data. As part of its dissemination strategy, CGHR is continuously looking for new ways to share its research findings. This site allows users to explore epidemiological data via an interactive map. CGHR hopes that government officials and the general public find this site very useful.

About CGHR

The Centre for Global Health Research (CGHR) is an independent, not-for-profit organization co-sponsored by St. Michael's Hospital (Toronto) and the University of Toronto. Founded in 2002 on the principle that effective health initiatives must be supported by reliable, evidence-based research, CGHR was created to conduct large-scale epidemiological studies in developing countries. CGHR's mission is to lead high-quality public health research that advances global health for all, with particular attention to the world's poorest populations. To learn more about CGHR please visit us at www.cghr.org.

About IIPS

The International Institute for Population Sciences (IIPS), erstwhile known as the Demographic Training and Research Center, was established in 1956 jointly by the United Nations and the Government of India. In 1985, the Institute was renamed with its current name after its recognition as Deemed University by the University Grant Commission of India; it is the only institute in the world with a university status dedicated to a single discipline of Population Sciences with a mission to teach, undertake research and provide policy inputs to the Government of India. The Institute also provides consultancy to the Government and Non-Government organizations and other academic institutions. The research projects of the Institute are financially supported by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MOHFW), USAID, NIH, NIA DFID, WHO, UNFPA, and UNICEF. The Institute presently has 38 full time faculty and 300 plus full time students at post graduate level including 130 doctoral candidates and has trained more than 2000 demographers in Population, Health and Development from ESCAP countries since its inception.
